Highways news and if you commute into or through Bristol there is some major engineering work happening along the spur onto the M4.

Essential work is getting under way on the M32 junction 2 northbound exit slip road will enable restrictions in place since a major fire last year to be removed.

Following the incident and to prevent further damage, a weight and width restriction was put in place along its entire length, meaning larger, heavier vehicles are unable to use it.

From today (10 May), a 13-week programme of work will enable all restrictions to be removed.

While the majority of the work will take place during the daytime, with mostly no change to the current exit slip road restrictions, two weeks of full closures will be needed while concrete work takes place.

This is to prevent vibrations through the structure, allowing the concrete to set, and will take place from Monday 14 June and Monday 28 June, with full exit slip closures from 00.01 on Monday to 23:59 on Friday on both weeks.

Terry Robinson, Asset Structure Manager for Highways England, said: "At Highways England, safety is our number one priority and rigorous tests and assessments showed it was necessary to put weight and width restrictions in place.

"Fully repairing the junction will mean we are able to remove all restrictions on the road, increasing capacity and once again allowing large vehicles to come off northbound at the junction.

"We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating, but we'd like to thank motorists in advance for their patience while this vital work takes place. There may be some noise disturbance, but we will do all we can to keep this to a minimum."

During the closures of the M32 junction 2 northbound exit slip road, traffic will be diverted via junction 1 and back onto the M32 southbound to exit via the junction 2 southbound slip road.

A fully signed diversion route will be in place.

During the work, the three-tonne weight, and two-metre vehicle width restriction will remain, which means that only cars and motorcycles will be able to use it.

Signs will advise that all other vehicles, aside from cars and motorcycles, should continue to use the official diversion via junction 1 and the southbound junction 2 slip road, or take an alternative route entirely.
