Frome is one of the worst areas for gamers to indulge in their favourite pastime according to new research.

Comparethemarket.com crunched the data to find the areas in England that have the best and worst broadband, based on the average speed (Mbps), superfast availability, and the percentage of the area's population unable to receive decent broadband.

Central Devon is officially ranked as the worst place in the country for gamers and five out of the 10 worst areas are in the South West - the Somerton and Frome Constituency, Torridge, Forest of Dean, and Tiverton and Honiton.

At the other end of the scale, Kingston Upon Hull is hailed as the best place for gamers, ranking highly for average speeds and availability of superfast broadband.

Holly Niblett, head of digital at comparethemarket.com, said: "Lockdown has seen a surge in the number of people relying on the internet for work and leisure.

"There is a wide disparity in the connection speeds and access to superfast broadband across the country, with people facing a particularly hostile environment in parts of the South West.

"For many, a reliable internet connection is a lifeline during a difficult time."

The top ten of England's worst areas for gamers: 10 - Cities of London and Westminster; 9 - Somerton and Frome; 8 - Harwich and North Essex; 7 - Tiverton and Honiton; 6 - North Herefordshire; 5 - Penrith and The Border; 4 - Ludlow; 3 - Forest of Dean; 2 - Torridge and West Devon; 1 - Central Devon.

The best areas for gaming: 1 - Kingston Upon Hull East; 2 - Kingston Upon Hull North; 3 - Kingston Upon Hull West and Hessle; 4 - Crawley; 5 - Filton and Bradley Stoke; 6 - Luton North; 7 - Morecambe and Lunesdale; 8 - Great Grimsby; 9 - Stevenage; 10 - Gillingham and Rainham.

Tips for improving gaming include - test the speed of your broadband connection; move your router away from other devices; turn off WiFi on devices you're not using; give your computer a spring clean.
