Organisers of a festive fundraising golf day being held in Frome are seeking donations for auction prizes to boost the amount raised on the day.

For the last 20 years there has been an annual winter golf comp always held between Christmas and new year.

Originally held at Critchill Golf Club, the organisers have tried a few alternative venues, but are very settled with their new home - Orchardleigh.

One of the organisers, Steve Middle, said: "The staff are so friendly and really are part of the atmosphere.

"Looking back at the photo from 1999, there are sadly a few of our friends that have passed along the way, but we are lucky to have such a large group of awful golfers who are happy to meet up once a year to make up the numbers.

"I changed the format a few years ago to a Texas Scramble event meaning that you all take a shot from wherever the best tee shot lands and continue in that format until you play out the hole.

"This makes it much more of a team sport, and compensates for the dire level of ability among us.

"This year, I already have around 40 golfers signed up for the December 27 tournament. We've decided to undertake a charity auction afterwards to raise some money for the family of a very close friend of ours who lost his battle with cancer a couple of months ago.

"His wife has worked tirelessly over the last couple of years not just at home with the family but putting on her own fundraisers for Macmillan Cancer Support.

"So I want us to raise enough cash to send her and the kids on a nice holiday, regardless of how much she'll fight to refuse.

"We already have some great prizes offered up by local individuals and businesses, but we can't have too many, so if there are any other businesses who could put something up for auction, we would be extremely grateful.

"The golf itself is almost just a by product of a great day out with some amazing friends who don't see each other often enough.

"Once its over, we'll be heading into town to round off the night singing karaoke in the Blue Boar... at least I will be."
