The Frome RFC 2nd XV welcomed Calne RFC 1st XV to The Lane on Saturday, and although it was cold, it was perfect weather conditions to move the ball about for a free flowing game.

Frome started the half brightly, getting the ball wide to Winger Ed Darwent, who made an early break getting into the Calne 22 but unfortunately giving away a penalty which halted the attack.

But on 8 mins Darwent made another break which set up a run of phases before a gap in the defence was spotted and Scrum Half Harry Burge, who put Flanker Matt Smith clean through to score under the posts. Captain David Abrahams adding the extra points.

Calne were not going to be blown away, and showed they were a more organised outfit this time round. A line out five metres out from Frome's line, Calne caught and drove to the line and despite Frome's best efforts they couldn't stop the visitors from getting over to score.

Abrahams' restart was right on the money and No. 8 Rob James caught it and was abl to feed Centre Cory Plumridge who broke through the defense only to be tackled just short of the line.

Quick thinking from Abrahams saw him chip a kick over the top which Flanker Garrie Webster was unlucky not to touch down, only to be beaten by a last ditch dive by the Calne defence.

On 18 mins Frome gained a line out 5 metres from Calne's line, from this Frome showed Calne they too could catch and drive, with Hooker Alex Chalmers controlling the ball at the back of the maul until he saw his chance and crashed over from close range. The tight angle saw the kick go just wide.

Frome were now on top and were awarded a scrum on the half way line, No.8 James went blind feeding Scrum Half Burge, who then fed Full Back John Spencer accelerated towards the defensive line, he put Winger Craig Thompson in space, who then managed to ride the covering tackle and run in for the try. The extras being missed.

Unfortunately Frome lost 2nd Row Mark Regler to injury, which saw a change to the pack with Gordon Grieson coming on.

Then on 40 mins the Calne Fly Half tried a chip over the top, which Full Back Spencer seized on and broke through the tacklers and off loaded to debutant Centre Lepani Kolinisau who drew his man and put Centre Plumridge in space, and although Plumridge still had a lot to do from Frome's 10 metre line, he held off the cover tackle from the full back and managed to touch down in the corner ending a move that had started on Frome's 22. The conversion being missed.

HT: Frome RFC 22 - 5 Calne RFC

From the start of the half Frome looked to up the pace and gained a line out on Calnes 22. The ball was moved off the top of the line out straight out to Fly Half Abrahams who timed his pass to Centre Kolinisau to perfection who ran a lovely line to go in under the posts untouched. Abrahams adding the conversion.

From the kick off Calne looked to put the home side under pressure, but Frome had their tails up and ran the ball again from their 22, going through the hands, with Flanker Matt Smith going through the gap and getting clear of the defence feeding Centre Plumridge who came from deep and managing to touch down despite the best efforts of the last ditch defence. The extras being missed.

Frome then came under pressure from the Calne attack in particular the Calne backline, and on 55 mins Frome were unlucky to concede a try out wide with Calne scoring in the corner.

A reshuffle in the pack and backline saw Burge made way for Damon Ashmore to come on the field of play, and on 62 mins saw Kyle Williamson come on for Darwent.

Both sides cancelled themselves out over the final plays of the match with some unlucky knock ons letting down the Frome attacks.

FT: Frome RFC II 34 - 10 Calne RFC

A good hard Fought match played in the right spirit, with Calne putting in some great hits and kept going to the final whistle. Player of the Match went to Centre Cory Plumridge for his hard carries, two tries and great defensive work.

Frome continue to sit top of Dorset & Wilts 1 North, and need to maintain winning ways when this Saturday they travel to bottom place Swindon RFC 2nd XV in what's set to be another tough fixture.
