A man from Street with cerebral palsy is encouraging people who are living with a disability to check if they are eligible for a Disabled Facilities Grant.

The call out to Mendip residents who may benefit from the District Council grant scheme, marks this year's International Day of Disabilities (3rd December 2020).

Forty one year old David said: "I wanted to use this important day to encourage other people to apply for the Disabled Facilities Grant. The adaptations to my home have meant I can now live independently, with a live-in carer.

"The hallway was redesigned to allow me to do 360-degree turnarounds in the wheelchair and there is good access around the whole bungalow. I have a security camera on the door which means that I can see who is there when I am home alone. When I want to go out or come back home then my automatic door means I can come and go as I wish. There is also a hoist which can be managed by a single carer for easy transfers in the bedroom and bathroom.

"Over the last year including the lockdowns because of COVID-19, I have really appreciated the works to the house thanks to the Disabled Facilities Grant. They mean that I can now enjoy maximum independence, I feel safe at home and can get around easily."

Disability Facility Grants are means tested grants available for adaptations so that disabled people can live independently and safely in their homes with the facilities they need.

The grants are available from Mendip District Council following a referral from a County Council Occupational Therapist and commonly pay for works such as stairlifts, level access shower rooms, heating improvements, improved access, room conversions and extensions. Grants are available up to £30,000 and the Council's Home Improvement Agency, Somerset Independence Plus are on hand to help clients organise and complete the works.

David said: "I wanted to tell my story to encourage anyone living with a disability to look into this grant. It has changed my life and it could change yours or someone you know. Don't delay get in touch for some advice."

Cllr. Richard Pinnock, Portfolio Holder for Housing Services and Governance at Mendip District Council, said: "I am delighted to see the life changing improvements the grant has made to David's quality of life. I can only echo his comments and say there is help out there, so do please get in touch with us."
