Noticed anything in the skies over Frome recently?

If you've looked up during lockdown, you can't help but to have noticed the strange lights and smoke trails that have appeared on fine evenings in the skies over Frome and the surrounding areas.

It is the work of father and son air display team Tim and Tom Dews of Airborne Pyrotechnics, Longbridge Devill.

Tim told us; "With lockdown came the cancellation of all our regular events and airshows. Fed up at home, Tom and I decided to keep our aerobatic skills up to date by practising of an evening. We realised we weren't the only ones bored at home so have been using our practise air time over different places to try and brighten the gloom.

We have flown over all the local towns and villages but by far the best response to our aerobatics has been from the people of Frome. We fly Grob 109b motor gliders which are super-efficient, quiet and graceful .

"They have thousands of coloured LEDs which is how we light up the sky as we fly, as well as engine smoke for sky trails, and for really special events we can strap pyrotechnics to the wing tips. Our normal business is air shows, garden parties, weddings and special birthdays, but COVID-19 and lockdown brought that to an abrupt stop. I just hope we have lifted the spirits of those that have seen us."

Unfortunately, due to CAA regulations, the team are unable to say in advance where they will be practising, so keep your eyes to the skies and see if you can spot a treat.

Meantime, if you have a special occasion coming up and would like to book the team click here: the airborne pyrotechnics site
