A prime development site in Frome has been sold.

The site of what was once The Weaver pub on The Butts has been sold by Cooper & Tanner.

Nub News understands it was actually sold in November, but the notice has only been put up today (December 29).

The pub was a firm favourite back in the day, but was not originally at this exact address - it was a few doors down the road.

Originally called the New Inn the original pub dated back to at least 1857 where a record shows that the innkeeper, George Jelly, was fined 10 shillings for selling out of hours.

The pub certainly continued to have a boisterous history.

During WW2 in 1944 US Soldiers stationed in Keyford and Marston came into town with their own drink and were told, on arriving at the New Inn, that they couldn't drink their own liquor. The soldiers smashed up the pub, tables and glasses. The landlord called Marston camp and the military police arrived in force and arrested the soldiers. The next day the camp commandant visited the pub and wrote out a cheque for a substantial amount to cover the damage.

The pub was renamed the Weaver in the early 1970's and continued as a traditional pub before closing in 2009. The pub was demolished in 2013.
