Residents around Lower Innox in Frome have said the problem of swarming insects, something they say they have had issues with for years, been been particularly acute this year.

They have called on Wessex Water to look at the problem, many believing that it is connected with a nearby water treatment plant.

One resident posted : " We have had problems for years,we can't open our windows at night or it'll destroy whatever we're cooking. Have to turn all the lights off just to let the dog out for a wee."

A Wessex Water spokesperson said: "Chironomid (non-biting midge) levels are extremely high at present due to the warm and still weather we've experienced recently, and they occur naturally around water courses across the country.

"There are procedures in place to control flies and midges at Frome and all our water recycling centres, although we expect numbers to naturally decrease with colder temperatures on the way. "

Several residents have already called Wessex about the problem.

The area is well known for having flying insects in the warmer months, but social media posts indicate that it has been particularly acute this past month.

When Frome Nub News visited the area, we did not see any swarms of midges, but it was a cold time of day.

Wessex Water told us : " Some customers have contacted us about this and we will be responding to them individually to address any concerns."
