The famed George pub in the centre of Frome is still working on re-opening, says the brewery owner Wadworth.

Nub News had been told by two sources that the pub would not be re-opening post coronavirus lockdown, but that has been denied in a statement today (July 13).

The brewer Wadworth which is based in Devizes and runs The George said it is just taking longer than for other pubs to put in social distancing measures.

In a statement the brewery said: " Now that we have received the government guidance for pubs to re-open we are opening our pubs on a phased basis from 22nd July.

"We expect, by making our pubs Covid secure, they won't be trading at 100% for some considerable time.

"The social distancing and new ways of working will currently impact some sites more like the George in Frome and therefore we have made the decision to keep those pubs temporarily closed. We will continue to review this situation. "

Last month the Wiltshire-based company announced it was making around 57 of its workers redundant due to the coronavirus emergency. Wadworth, which has been brewing since 1875 and is an independent family-run business, has around 150 pubs.

The George - officially known as The George Hotel & Granary - dates back to 1650, but was renovated in 1874 when the distinctive balcony was added.
