At the Somerset Earwax Clinic in Frome, Teresa Munro, a Nursing Sister with over 30 years of experience, uses a safer and more efficient approach to earwax removal that significantly improves hearing health.

Fully approved and regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), her clinic leads the way in ear care by offering earwax removal via irrigation—a controlled water flow method to rinse out earwax gently.

"Being CQC registered ensures that we adhere to the highest standards of care and that our procedures are carried out safely and effectively," Teresa explained.

The clinic's CQC approval is crucial, as earwax removal is regulated, and practising without CQC registration is an offence.

"Specialising in ear wax removal for the past six years has been incredibly fulfilling," Teresa said. "It's rewarding to see how this service greatly improves the quality of life for my clients.

The clinic's process, which costs £40 for one ear and £60 for both, uses a controlled stream of water to flush out wax gently. This method is more effective and minimises the discomfort associated with older methods such as syringing and even more modern methods like micro suction. The use of irrigation also reduces the risk of trauma or irritation to the sensitive structures of the ear canal.

Earwax, or cerumen, is a natural substance produced to protect the ear by trapping dirt and slowing the growth of bacteria. However, it can build up and become hard, leading to blockage, especially in people with narrow or hairy ear canals, the elderly, or those who frequently use earplugs.

Symptoms of earwax buildup can vary but typically include earache, a feeling of fullness in the ear, ringing or noises in the ear (tinnitus), hearing loss, and occasionally itchiness or discharge from the ear canal.

"If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, or you need to turn the TV volume up, it might be time to check if earwax is the culprit," Teresa advised.

The clinic also offers a pre-audiology check for £12, which is recommended for anyone planning a hearing aid consultation "It's a practical step—hospitals will send you back if earwax is the issue, so it's best to address it beforehand," she advises also home visits can be arranged for the housebound or those who find it difficult to get to the Medical Centre.

Patient testimonials reflect the clinic's success, with many reporting life-changing improvements. Teresa recalls one particularly relieved patient who, after treatment at her clinic, said: "At last! That horrible noise in my ears has gone!"

"Having feedback like that is so rewarding because you know you've truly improved someone's quality of life," Teresa said.

For those interested in learning more about this treatment or to schedule an appointment, Teresa Munro is available for consultations at the Somerset Earwax Clinic. She can be reached at 07962 106045 or via email at [email protected].
