Purple Elephant Productions has a new appeal in these difficult times

An initiative supporting the children of vulnerable families during the coronavirus pandemic has already delivered 300 play resources to Frome households.

Purple Elephant Productions - the not-for-profit organiser of Frome Toy Library, Frome Children's Festival/Gen-Z, the Sports Festival and Family Holiday Fun school holiday activities - is now hard at work making activity packs.

The community interest company is working with schools and Fair Frome to distribute creative activities to local families most in need, while adhering to Government guidance on cleaning and social distancing.

It set up an emergency family support fund and almost £600 - including £200 from Frome Lions Club - has already been pledged by the community.

But, to meet its objectives, Purple Elephant Productions is aiming to raise £2,500 in donations to add to £2,000 initial funding transferred from grants awarded for projects that have had to be suspended.

The organisation says: "There are over 700 children in Frome from low income families.

"These families will be hit hard by the coronavirus and we want to support them by providing creative and active things for them to do while self-isolating or practising social distancing.

"We have a little funding to get us started but we're looking to raise an additional £2,500 to buy craft and similar resources to create family activity packs; to buy new toys and games to lend to families, to pay our staff to create activity packs and manage loans; and to cover expenses such as petrol for deliveries.

"Our support will give families creative things to do together and the opportunity to borrow toys and games free of charge, which they can change regularly.

"Hopefully this will help to keep a little sanity in the home."

Lion Tony Buchan, President of Frome Lions Club said: "Our club was absolutely delighted to be able to donate to this very worthy cause during these very difficult times. To give children of vulnerable families the opportunity to be able to access these play resources is something that we are so very proud to be a part of. Although we, like everyone else, are having to observe the restrictions being placed upon us because of the current health emergency, we are still here to help our community in any way we can."
