Another Frome Cheap Street institution, The Settle, closes up after 26 years

By Susie Watkins 7th Dec 2021

In case you missed it the cafe and restaurant in the centre of Frome, The Settle, closed on December 4.

There was widespread sadness at the closure, coming as it did after 26 years of serving the community of Frome.

The Settle on Cheap Street in Frome was an institution.

Many people wrote how they had taken children and then grandchildren to the cafe for cake on their way back from school or dance classes at the nearby church.

The tea rooms, were put up for sale last autumn, but it is not clear if they have been sold as a going concern.

You can read about that news HERE : it was priced at £465,000

Along Cheap Street the former dress shop Fine Fettle Fashion at number 24 is still looking for a tenant, that closed in August.

Luckily Sagebury Fine Foods at number 21 was transformed into a Spanish tapas and deli space Lo Rapitenc.

The Settle was once Egon Ronay recommended and won a coveted Les Routiers award. It was started as The Settle in 1975 by a former shepherdess and you can hear her story on how she rebuilt the cafe, being forced to drive a tractor down Cheap Street, by clicking HERE

Margaret Vaughan tells her Working Memories story One post on social media summed up many feelings : " It is very sad to see it close, but it doesn't really fit in with the way Frome looks today."
