There was a demonstration today (November 14) outside Barclays Bank to protest the bank's continued investment in fossil fuels.

Part of a national wave of protests, the campaigners put 'oil' around the bank in market place and were wearing rebel outfits and face masks.

They told Nub News that they did understand that other banks were investing in oil, but that: " We have to start somewhere."

Elsewhere in the West Country protestors, including members of Extinction Rebellion, have been staging a pretend clean up outside branches, with mops and buckets.

They have called Barclays "Europe's dirtiest bank". One campaigner at the Frome branch said she was out on the protest not for herself, but for her grandchildren.

The Brandalism campaign - which is a national movement to hurt the company's brand with peaceful protest - follows previous actions targeting HSBC and Standard Chartered banks. The Campaign claims that, together with Barclays, these 'fossil banks' supported a combined $12 billion in fossil fuel financing in the first six months of 2021 alone, doubling down on their support to polluting industries – despite each bank claiming to be targeting net zero emissions by 2050.
