Summer in a small Somerset town will be characterised by constant roadworks as numerous different improvements are undertaken.
Somerset Council is to carry out multiple improvements to different roads in and around Bruton between Monday (July 17) and August 27 – the day before the August bank holiday.
The council said this "significant investment" in Bruton's road network would "minimise the length of disruption for residents, businesses and road users" and had been agreed following discussions with the town council.
The first scheme begins on Monday (July 17) and will see pedestrian safety improvements made to the junction of the Coombe Street and the A359 High Street, with some of the pavements being made wider and safer.
During this phase, Coombe Street will be closed 24 hours a day, seven days a week until Friday, August 4, while the High Street junction will be controlled by temporary traffic lights.
Phase two will see High Street closed between 9:30am and 5pm closed every day between Monday, August 7 and Wednesday, August 16 – following by a 24-hours closed between the evening of August 16 and 7am on Saturday, August 19.
This phase will allow Wales and West Utilities to connect a new gas main in the High Street, to upgrade their existing infrastructure and "ensure continuity of supply to the area".
The third phase will see a section of the A359 Patwell Street resurfaced, with the road being closed from 6pm to 11:30pm from Wednesday, August 23 to Sunday, August 27.
A further resurfacing scheme is planned for the B3081 Station Road, but this has been pushed back to October to avoid further disruption during the summer.
On top of these more intensive roadworks, the council is carrying out surface dressing on several Bruton roads during the summer holidays – with the dates being subject to change due to the weather.
Under the current proposals, the B3081 Dropping Lane and Park Wall (at the southern edge of the town) will be repaired on Friday, July 21 – but this could be pushed back as far as Monday, August 3.
Surface dressing is currently planned to take place on the A359 Frome Road and Brewham Road (where two major housing developments are planned) on Thursday, August 17 – but this could be pushed back to Sunday, August 27.
In each case, the roads in question will need to be closed for an entire day while they are surface dressed.
A council spokesman said: "These schemes will all be of immense benefit to Bruton and its network in the long-term future, and this is a significant investment in the network.
"We understand there is likely to be some disruption this summer to ensure that the work gets done efficiently, but this 'one hit' approach ensures that the roads in Bruton will be in a far better place come the autumn, and it avoids spreading the work out over a longer period or making repeat visits."
Pedestrian access for residents and businesses in the affected areas will be maintained throughout and diversions will be signed and in place.
