On Sunday, Frome Under 14's were joined by Wells Under 14's for a friendly at The Lane.
On a bright, but windy day both teams enjoyed initial periods of possession, with conditions meaning the ball was spilt forward occasionally. The resulting scrums were well poised. Following a good push from Wells, Frome got the ball away and a good run and quick ball from Ewan Cox released Kacper Martynovic, who was well tackled into touch.
Both teams enjoyed pressure around the halfway line, Frome's Rob Norris and Josh Clarke tackled well, to keep Wells at bay. A well worked line out move released Alfie Rayers who passed to Adam Hancock. He was eventually brought down just short of the try line and Wells were able to relieve the pressure. Captain Harrie Webster fielded a long kick and ran it back with interest, before passing the ball to Aaron Worrell, who was tackled into touch. More fearsome tackling from Norris and Harry Greenwood brought the half to an end, helping keep the game scoreless at the break.
The second half began with a strong carry from the kick-off by Archie Pearn. Unfortunately the ball was lost at the resulting ruck and Wells attacked down the blind-side. A loose pass from Wells was intercepted by Zach Sibley, who sprinted excellently from the half-way line, scoring the opening try. Pearn converted the extra's.
Wells hit back minutes later, a forwards move, finished under the posts. The kick successful, to make it 7 - 7. It was Frome's turn to run with ball in hand, quick hands from Pearn, Webster and Sibley sent Liam Backhurst into space. He ran with pace down the blindside, before being well tackled. Following their line-out, Wells attacked at speed, scoring under the posts after a barn-storming run. The score was 7 - 14 going into the final three minutes.
Great work at the ruck by Ben Llewelyn and Oscar Wallis led to a turnover for Norris. The resulting ball was fed from Pearn to Webster who sprinted past two defenders, to score in the corner. With Wells still in the lead, Pearn slotted his conversion to leave the game at 14 - 14.
A fair result, with both teams working hard and playing some good rugby on a blustery day in Frome.
