Campaigners against the existing proposals for the derelict Frome space, Saxonvale, have put over their alternative plans for housing on the site.

In their designs for the site, they have detailed how homes will potentially look and argue that their vision is driven by people's desire to create their own living spaces. They have previously offered up an alternative look to so-called School Quarter on the site.

Mendip Council bought two adjacent plots of land previously owned by Notts Industries and Terramond; a space of around 9.2 acres, with a view to creating a new town centre mixed development. They have exchanged a conditional contract with the Acorn Property Group for the phased development of Saxonvale.

Opponents fighting the existing plans have now put forward their visualisation of how the homes area could look. Mayday Saxonvale say they have come up with a true social alternative for the site.

Andrew Kirby Architects have drafted the plans and said: "Tiny Homes form an essential part of the Mayday Masterplan representing a starting point for people wanting to construct their own well-living environment.

"We have designed a space in the plan which is efficiently integrated into the two-storey or stacked parking infrastructure, and working with the contours of the land, a rooftop platform can support this new Tiny Home community.

"An efficient pattern of 3.5m x 7.5m 'starter plots' will offer custom build opportunities for home builders to create their ideal mini home. The custom build model means you can design and build your own home in the allocated space and height, which will bring inventiveness and variety in its own right projecting important sustainable principles that have been championed in Frome."

The designs include raised bed food growing areas for each home, along with larger green communal areas and so-called 'living walls'.

The existing vision for Saxonvale, as described on the Mendip Council site is: "A generational opportunity to deliver an exemplar development on the banks of the River Frome. High quality design taking the historic grain of Frome as its starting point, and delivering a vibrant, mixed use neighbourhood, with flexible commercial/ employment space, high quality public realm, and homes for all ages."

Plans first went in front of councillors in May 2019, but in spite of reports that a final decision could come this summer, that date passed.
