Celebrate a very special Refugee Week this year in Frome
Refugee week this year runs from the 19th – 25th June, and to celebrate, Frome Town Council are organising two events for the local community centred around refugees.
On Tuesday 20th June, which is also World Refugee Day, both refugees and residents are invited to come along to Victoria Park for a Community Picnic. Caravan Arts will be there, joined by play rangers, Super Roots, who will get busy with some of the new Playpod scrap. Or come and practise your circus skills with the community play equipment – there will be Mozi rings, hula hoops, poi spinning, juggling balls, ribbon play and more!
There will be lots on offer at the Victoria Park Community Café who will be supporting and coordinating the refreshments for everyone to enjoy together, and all are invited to bring chairs, blankets and a plate of food to share with others.
The second event is a Ukrainian Cultural Awareness session on Wednesday 21st June in partnership with The Good Heart. The event aims to share information and news from our Ukrainian community and a chance to learn some interesting Ukrainian culture. Tickets for this event are available from the link below
Sara Butler, Mayor of Frome said: "I was proud to welcome our Ukrainian refugees last year in September with a picnic in Rodden Meadow and think that this is a great way for us all to get behind all our refugees who find themselves in Frome – to ensure that they feel welcome and included and part of the community but also to hear their stories and share – food, play and culture, and to come together and recognise and rejoice in the fact that we are all just human!".
It's the 25th anniversary of Refugee Week this year and the theme of compassion has been chosen. Refugee Week aims to encourage people to help, support and understand refugees and the struggles they endure and central to this is the idea of compassion.
