The central Frome Co-op is, Nub News understands, going to shut its doors.

The Co-operative, which is run by the Radstock branch of the society, is reportedly not going to renew its lease and will close on June 24.

It is not clear what will happen to the Post Office which is inside the supermarket.

Staff have told Nub News that they were told the overheads on the large shop were too high and that they have been told to find new stores to work in, or find other jobs.

It is a big blow to The Westway which last year saw the clothing and homeware shop M&Co shut and Peacocks, which had been due to take a lease on a store opposite, not arrive. That shop space is around 6,850 sq ft and is still up for rent.

M& Co closed abruptly on August 8 and its former shop, while still being advertised as available, is being used by Frome Rotary on a temporary basis once lockdown ends as a furniture store.

The Westway, which was built in 1979, has a total of just over 66,000 square feet of retail area.
