Highway changes to Market Place and Cork Street in Frome have been approved by Mendip District Council.

The work includes the resurfacing of existing footways, the introduction of a central splitter island and two pedestrian crossings, changes to the existing bus stop layout including new shelters, and creation of new disabled and loading bays in the Market Place.

The work in Cork Street involves a new disabled bay, and the application had been made by Frome Town Council.

In approving the application, the planning officer's report states: "The proposal is not for new highway development but rather improvements to the existing highway layout within the town centre and is therefore acceptable in principle subject to the usual planning controls of design, amenity and importantly highway safety.

"The scheme in general will result in a clear enhancement having regard for the new surfacing, etc, preserving the character of the surrounding conservation area and safeguarding the historic setting of numerous listed buildings adjacent to the highway.

"While it is appreciated that there are small individual concerns to specific elements of the scheme including those from the Frome Civic Society, overall the proposed works are a significant improvement over the existing will not have an adverse impact on the character of the area."
