Question one: Which local charity in the heart of Frome is hosting a quiz night on 20th June? Answer: The Cheese and Grain, of course.

Back by popular demand the Cheese and Grain's charity quiz night is back for a new season. To kick it off they will be partnering with Marston Foods for what promises to be a brilliant evening.

At the end of February, avid brainiacs raised over £400 for Prostate Cancer UK and with the forthcoming June Quiz, they are hoping beat that record to raise vital funds for local girl, Poppy Edwards, in order to send her off to college this September with much-needed specialist equipment.

Poppy has a condition called X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH for short), which prevents her kidneys from accessing phosphates, vitamin D and calcium.

This has led to her bones being formed incorrectly, and nine operations later, her legs are a lot better, but still painful and not quite the right shape.

Poppy can walk, just not very far and not very fast. If she does too much, it can set her back for days with pain in her knees, hips and long bones.

At school she leaves lessons early to avoid the crush and get to the next one on time. She's also lost the lower sound ranges in her hearing and wears hearing aids. She can't hear car engines and struggles with men's voices.

Leona McDonald, of Marston Foods, said "The reason we are raising money is so that we can get an electric wheelchair for Poppy when she goes to Frome College, as she's not going to manage the larger campus.

"We also hope to get a radio aid for home. She has one at school so that she can plug straight into her teacher's voice, or the small group of children she is working with."

Poppy would also benefit from specialist physiotherapy which is not available on the NHS.

Poppy's family describe her as "a girl who doesn't ever give up, who's funny, and quick witted, clever and an avid reader. Everyone who meets her loves her, and she makes it her mission in life to make you smile".

There will be smiles all round on 20th June. Leona will be hosting the evening alongside Cheese and Grain resident Quiz Master Luke Maunder.

The questions begin at 7.30pm but the Grain Bar will be open from 6.30pm to encourage early arrivals with a full menu of food and drinks available.

Marston Foods will be providing an array of desserts for a donation only. There will be a raffle and bonus games throughout the evening, promising one of the most accessible quizzes in town.

Tickets are £10 for teams of no more than five and can be purchased through the Cheese and Grain box office 01373 455 420 or online at www.cheeseandgrain.com/whats-on.
