On a recent chilly Saturday morning, 11 members of staff from Mendip District Council gathered at Mells Cricket Club in preparation to take part in the Mells 10k.

Team Mendip consisted of seven walkers - Jade, Laura, Angie, Julie, Shannon, Stuart and Tracy - and four runners Claire, Rob, Adam and Abi.

Luckily, the rain held off as the walkers kicked off at 10am and the runners set off at 11am. The route took place around the Mells Park Estate which is not normally open to the public.

It was muddy, hilly but beautiful and participants were also greeted by the very friendly resident cows.

The annual Mells 10k is organised by Su and Nigel Crutchley in memory of their son Ben, who passed away in 2012 with cancer.

The family from Frome, who were supported by CLIC Sargent nurses, are now determined to raise £1 million for the charity in honour of their son.

This year, Mendip District Council staff chose CLIC Sargent as their charity of the year and have already raised more than £3,000 for them through fundraisers. So far, Team Mendip have raised an additional £285 for completing the Mells 10k.

Mendip District Council's chief executive, Stuart Brown, who took part in the walk, said: "We had a brilliant morning taking part in the Mells 10k.

"The route was stunning but challenging and I was a little bit sore on Sunday. However, the Mendip team did really well and walked the route in under two hours and the runners completed it under one hour and 30 minutes.

"We are all really proud to have raised almost £300 for CLIC Sargent in memory of Ben to add towards our charity of the year total."
