It may not quite be Spring like here in Frome but one flower - seems to be thriving in the cold and uncertain weather.

The town seems to be awash with dandelions, although of course a lot of people call them weeds.

The lower overnight temperatures have proved hazardous for delicate bedding plants, but these along the river bank in Frome are seemingly enjoying the conditions.

Dandelions are the first food for insects after hibernation and unlike most other plants, have pollen AND nectar. They are hardy and will come alive in areas where the soil is too compact for other plants. When they die off they also put calcium into the soil too, so they are actually soil improvers, according to some.

A rash of social media posts have been urging people to make more of the humble dandelion and see it for a soil improver and source of food for bees.

The post explains : " You can even tell by my growth at which stage my help is at. If my leaves are flat on the ground then I'm far from ready but if they all reach up then I'm already a long way on my way. "

Dandelions used to be known as honey for the poor because the flowers can also be used in cooking, even made into a jam, but don't pick until the end of May

So the advice is - leave them looking lovely.
