Dozens of new homes could be constructed near a major Somerset quarry if new plans are given the green light.
Stonewood Homes has applied for permission to build 38 homes on the eastern side of Frog Lane in the village of Stoke St Michael, near Shepton Mallet.
The site was allocated for housing within the Mendip Local Plan Part II (which was ratified by councillors in December 2021), with officers anticipating it could deliver a minimum of 30 homes.
Somerset Council – which replaced Mendip District Council in April 2023 – is expected to make a decision on the proposals by the early-summer.
The site lies at the western edge of the village, north of the recreation ground and less than a mile from the Moons Hill Quarry, where the Wainwright aggregate and asphalt company is based.
Access will be onto Frog Lane, with the homes – of which 11 will be affordable – wrapping around the existing allotments.
Each of the new homes will be fitted with solar panels and air source heat pumps to reduce both their environmental impact and their owners' bills.
Under the Mendip Local Plan Part II, any development on the site would have to either financial contribute towards the extension of Stoke St Michael Primary School or provide a parcel of land to assist with this.
A spokesman for APG (representing the Chippenham-based developer) said: "The layout has been designed to reduce road infrastructure and promote a more pedestrian friendly street-scene with shared surfaces and footpaths linking into the playing fields and existing public rights of way.
"The proposed development strikes a balance between housing needs, community inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.
"With a focus on green infrastructure aligned with the building with nature standard, accessibility, and sustainable design, the development emerges as a model for thoughtful urban planning, contributing positively to both the local community and broader environmental goals."
Stonewood Homes was previously refused permission for two similarly sized developments in the former Mendip area.
Its plans for 21 homes on the Bell Hill Garage site off the A366 Bell Hill in Norton St Philip were refused in March 2023, while the Planning Inspectorate dismissed an appeal against 45 homes on Warminster Road in Beckington in October 2022.
The village has seen recent interest from other developers, with Stoke St Michael LVA LLP securing permission on appeal in January 2023 to build 47 homes to the east of Coalpit Lane.
Somerset Council is expected to make a decision on the Frog Lane proposals later in the year.
