Epic run comes to an incredible finish line total
For someone who was not too embarrassed to knock on a stranger's door and ask to use their loo, even as their wife was just out of the bath, not much fazes Rachel Clark,
But today she was struck dumb when it was finally revealed how much her mile a day running has raised for charity.
The police sergeant, who has been running a mile, every day, in all kinds of weather and over all kinds of terrain, from volcanoes to hills (which she hates), was overwhelmed with the final total for her fundraising efforts.
Following her final mile, with every raffle ticket sold, and every penny counted, and after she personally high fived nearly all the runners who ran with her in the cold, Rachel was handed a scrap of paper with the final amount raised.
She had set off to raise money for We Hear You, the cancer listening charity in Frome, in its 25th anniversary year. So it seemed fitting for her to aim to raise £2,500.
The final total, still being counted as Rachel and hundreds of children, mums, dads and dogs, fire officers and her police squad, ran the final mile at Frome Rugby Club, came to:
£18,160.47.
Rachel, who had just thanked all those who supported her over the year of running, including those at the schools who she visited to talk about her running for the cancer charity, events which moved her to tears as she listened to children who had lost parents to cancer, was nearly overwhelmed.
Rachel told the crowd: " It has been epic." Before thanking all her colleagues and fellow runners along with the WHY girls, as she called the fundraisers who work for the charity established by Jill Miller who passed away in 2019. Jill herself had sponsored Rachel a pound a mile before she died.
Rachel, who was very clear " I am a fundraiser, not a runner" now plans to take a few days off before resuming her charity work, began collecting for WHY after losing her mum. She said: " I was absolutely broken when my Mum and then Nan died. I'm grateful my GP suggested counselling and not medication. He was right. It's exactly what I needed to continue my life, a life I am so fortunate to now live."
She turned that tragedy into a powerful force and had already to date, broken records and raised a total over the years of £30,000. Apart from a well earned rest, she will be planning her next endeavour, a second world record skittling attempt in Frome in June.
