Fair Frome thanks the football squad, but says there is still so much need in the town

By Susie Watkins 24th Dec 2019

Frome footballers and Fair Frome share more than a capital letter. For the past year the team, the managers, and the fans, have been supporting the charity, and this weekend they collected over 200 donations at the ground, from everyone there, including players, from both teams, and even a linesman.

The football club would like to thank all of those who donated on Saturday, with special mention to St John's School whose students made Christmas stockings filled with toys and sweets.

Bob Ashford, the Chair of Trustees Fair Frome told Nub News: " "Fair Frome really values the partnership with Frome Town FC and it's supporters. The club is supportive all year round with help and backing to our many projects. One of our key aims is local problems, local solutions and community organisations like The Robins are best placed to understand that local need and assist in finding solutions."

In its yearly review Fair Frome gave a big thanks to all the generosity of those who have helped over the year, but also warned that the need is still very great.

Bob added : "On the surface Frome is a relatively prosperous town. The reality though is that many people continue to struggle to make ends meet and feed themselves or their families.

" Amidst the affluence in the town Frome has two Wards where 25% of children are living in poverty. Continuing closures or cuts to public services in the town (the latest being the closure of Routes the YMCA support project for young people) have also meant fewer lifelines and more people coming to use our services.

"2020 doesn't look like getting any better unfortunately. This is why, in addition to our existing services we have recently started our Food at Five project which provides a hot meal to families on low incomes three times per week during term time."

During 2019 Fair Frome, which started five years ago, has:

Distributed food parcels to almost 1,000 individuals and families through the food bank. Collected 27 tonnes of food donated by individuals and local groups. Given away additional food parcels to local schools and agencies at the start of school holidays and Christmas. Subscribed to the Fareshare Scheme to use surplus food from supermarkets and provided food to schools for Breakfast Clubs.

Over 200 people were given recycled furniture, white goods and household items.

Delivered meals to 750 children and families, the majority of whom are on benefits during school holidays as part of a Holiday Hunger project.

Provided hot, nutritious, meals three days per week at no cost if on benefits, or a small donation if not, to over 300 people a month during term time through that Food at Five project.

Provided small one-off cash grants to over 20 children and 10 young parents through the Fair Frome Assistance Scheme.
