A team of volunteer cyclists are taking to the saddle to deliver essential prescriptions to vulnerable Frome residents during the coronavirus outbreak.
The self-styled Frome Masketeers are working with Frome Medical Practice and pharmacy to make the drop-offs as part of their daily government-approved exercise.
Jez Lefevre, along with friends and fellow keen cyclists Betty and Sam, made their first ride-out on Tuesday this week, completing 30 doorstep drop-offs around the town.
The fourth member of the team, Dom, managed the logistics to optimise the cycle routes.
Jez told Frome Nub News: "Six months ago Frome Town Council was considering ways to improve the town by 2030 and one of those was around transport.
"It was something that we were interested in - less congestion, lower emissions and the knock-on benefits of how this improves everyone's wellbeing.
"We've been discussing starting an e-cargo bikes co-operative - a last mile delivery service - for Frome.
"Fast-forward six months and the start of the coronavirus outbreak got us thinking about how we could help.
"We starting chatting to Frome Medical Practice and pharmacy about doing prescription deliveries as they are light to carry and we can travel quickly by bike.
"Initially, the suggestion was that Frome Community Drivers would provide this service.
"But it was decided that they would be better doing other things - including delivering prescriptions to surrounding villages.
"So we started the town service yesterday for vulnerable people and those self-isolating because of serious health issues who can't, or don't want to, go to the pharmacy.
"We have been fully briefed by the medical practice on physical distancing procedures, patient confidentiality and protocol to follow to keep ourselves safe and patients safe.
"It's great to be able to put our expertise, enthusiasm and thighs to work for the good of the local community."
The four Frome Masketeers expect to be making daily drop-offs for the forseeable future. And, when the country gets back to normal, they are planning to set up bike courier co-operative Frome A to B.
"I have to say the feedback from the people we have delivered to has been wonderful.
"It's also been a real pleasure cycling around Frome and it makes you realise what life could be like with far fewer cars on the road," added Jez.
