The Frome fire service were today called out to a fire out at the quarry in Mells.

At just before 11am one appliance was called to Lime Kiln Quarry following reports of a fire in a recycling compacter.

Crews arrived on scene and requested assistance from a further appliance, also sent from Frome.

They got to work using one compressed air foam jet and two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. Crews then also used one hose reel jet and drag forks. Crews extinguished the fire and confirmed the cause to be an accidental ignition.

The compacter was badly damaged with an estimate that up to half of the machinery had been destroyed.

The duty of care was left with on-site staff.
