Sky gazers might be in luck this week with the first, and arguably the best, brightest and biggest meteor shower on show.
And with the weather forecast to ease up a little, you might be able to catch the 2024 Quadrantids which will be at their peak in early January, with the best views overnight January 3-4 .
According to Nasa the Quadrantids are considered to be one of the best annual meteor showers, explaining: "Most meteor showers have a two-day peak, which makes catching sight of these other meteors much more possible. The Quadrantids peak, on the other hand, is much shorter – only a few hours. (The reason the peak is so short is due to the shower's thin stream of particles and the fact that the Earth crosses the stream at a perpendicular angle.) During its peak, 60 to as many as 200 Quadrantid meteors can be seen per hour under perfect conditions.)"
Quadrantids are also known for their bright fireball meteors since they are bigger than usual.
So fingers crossed, especially since according to the latest (midday January 2) the weather outlook for Frome, is now showing some improvement, with rain easing and SOME bright spells.
The Met Office reports for Wednesday:
Bright spells, patches of cloud and blustery scattered showers with a chance of thunder. Breezy.
Outlook for Thursday to Saturday
Thursday will be a bright day with spells of winter sunshine but there will also be some showers, heavy at times. Friday will start partly cloudy with the risk of some mist and fog around and a few further showers lingering in places, but it will turn drier and increasingly bright through the day. Variable cloud and the odd shower on Saturday.
- Visibility: Moderate
- Pressure: 980mb, Falling
