A Frome-based animal rescue caring for more than 200 creatures on coronavirus lockdown has launched an urgent appeal for help.
Lauren May, who runs Cornpop Critter Rescue, lives with her vulnerable grandparents and is 'scared' to go shopping for fear she could jeopardise their wellbeing.
Both are in their 70s with health issues that put them in the coronavirus high risk category so the trio are self-isolating to ensure her grandparents are 'shielded'.
"I'm scared of the consequences of going out to shop," Lauren told Frome Nub News.
"I worry for my grandmother, in particular, she has asthma and has had double pneumonia three times.
"But food supplies for the animals are running very low and if I don't get the quantity of fruit, vegetables, parrot and chicken pellets, plus other items on our shopping list I am going to have to go and get them myself."
Several supporters have already stepped in to drop off free food, but much more is needed to keep the animals healthy.
"I am extremely grateful to everyone who has helped put food in our animals' bellies - you can see the difference in their behaviour and weight.
"But we will continue needing vegetables and other foods throughout these hard times.
"With over 200 animals on the premises - including 40 guinea pigs and 50-plus poultry - we need all the help we can get.
"I am worried for two guinea pig mums and their new litter - one had 10 young - and a couple of others that are heavily pregnant.
"Without the right food and vitamins for the mums who are feeding babies the little ones are at risk - and I worry that the pregnant ones may miscarry."
Cornpop Critters is a not-for-profit rescue, taking in mainly unwanted and in need reptiles, amphibians, birds and small furries, provided there is space and resources available.
Creatures are rehabilitated, when required, and either stay permanently or are rehomed for a small fee to cover costs.
Lauren is more than willing to pay for specialist feed and produce but, with money always tight, she is also hoping the community will help provide additional free food or exchange fresh produce for eggs laid by Cornpop Critter Rescue's poultry.
"We'd be grateful for anything, even if it's veg that people don't deem edible for themselves. We can make use of it as long as it is safe for rabbits and guinea pigs," she added.
Anyone who would like to donate food - or make a financial donation to buy produce - can contact Lauren on 07933 990706.
