Everyone Frome Nub News met on Saturday night LOVED the return the Frome Carnival, which saw the streets alight with vintage vehicles, acrobat tumblers and, of course, plenty of dazzle.

The Carnival, first in town in 1929, has not been hitting the streets since 2019, so today (September 26) organisers were thrilled to announce that the takings, so far, have already exceeded those three years ago. And that is not with all the coins yet counted.

Did you see the dinosaur one dad asked his toddler son? No I saw TWO - the delighted youngster replied.

There were plenty of equally impressed fans, young and old, lining the town streets to watch a procession over an hour long with everything from the local Mayor to some very jolly young farmers.

Glitter bands, helium balloons and lots and lots of families and while, excuse the cliché there was a chill in the air, it was a warm welcome to the long carnival, headed out by Frome town fire engines.

In perhaps a sign of things to come, one daring lone skateboarder set the scene, with a super fast ride down Bath Street, making the most of the closed roads and steep curves as he rode down from the Cornerhouse.

By our count there were:

Six sets of majorettes

A gaggle of gymnasts who (thankfully wearing gloves) back flipped and cart wheeled down the main road

At least four vintage tractors

Three huge wagons

A crowd of carnival extras

And a big and smiling band of Frome Young Farmers.

Something for everyone but most of all - a great big fundraising event - for local charities including the Carnival itself. Monies raised will help ensure the future of the Frome Street Carnival and also be split between this years beneficiaries which are Wessex Counselling & Psychotherapy, FairFrome, Coleford Scout Hut and Frome Community Wardrobe.

Final sum expected later this week
