Volunteers in Frome are organising free community events on Christmas Day for anyone who would like some company. There are three different venues; St Catharines Parish Hall on Park Road, Frome Cricket Club and The Frome Key Centre between 10.30am - 12.30pm. All guests will receive a warm welcome, conversation, entertainment and refreshments, as well as a festive meal and gifts to take home.

This is a change from previous years which have seen a variety of in-person events and home deliveries of hampers through the covid pandemic. The freshly prepared take home Christmas lunch will be of exceptional quality with all the trimmings and include dessert options. Home deliveries of individual/family meals and gifts will remain an option for anyone unable to attend in person as there will be a team of volunteer drivers to hand-deliver these festive treats.

Since 2011, volunteers in Frome have come together to organise a special event for anyone who would like some company on Christmas Day. With the support of local businesses and community groups, the day has been made special for hundreds of people over the last twelve years through donations of food, drink, carol singing, gifts, transport and festive fun times. This year partner organisations are Fair Frome and Active & In Touch, who together with a team of dedicated volunteers and support groups across the town, have been working hard to ensure everyone gets to enjoy a special Christmas Day despite the increasing tough times many are experiencing.

Organisers have listened carefully to feedback over recent years. Guests have said that they valued the time, conversations and community aspect of the event over the food itself. Many people found it difficult to be alone at home waiting for lunchtime to come. The size and length of previous events was rather overwhelming for many, so three smaller venues are now used. The event has also shifted to earlier in the morning, over a shorter period of time.

The cost-of-living crisis has also impacted the event budgets and practical arrangements. Reducing the event management by removing the preparation, serving and clearing of the food, means that volunteers can focus on making the event personalised and relaxing, allowing time for meaningful conversations and sharing fun times together.

Volunteer organiser Emma Warren says; "We're delighted to offer social company, refreshments, support and a warm space on Christmas Day, open to all ages and backgrounds. Christmas can be a challenging time for lots of people for many different reasons. To be able to welcome the whole community together on this special day is unique and inspiring for everyone involved. Frome really is a wonderful place to live."

This free event is open to anyone who would like company, there are no complicated criteria or judgements. The events are funded solely through donations from the local community.

Anyone who would like to come on Christmas Day or receive a food delivery at home, should book their space in advance by filling out a Guest Form available at Frome Library or by telephoning Margaret on 01373 465418.
