Frome's fridge and the leader of the volunteer team who keep it stocked, have won more praise for what it does for the community.

Lead volunteer Terri Pitts, who works tirelessly for the project, has said there is still more to do in the town and revealed she hopes to expand the community-based initiative with a fridge in the local college.

Community fridge co-ordinator and always friendly face, Terri was recently awarded the Frome Mayor's first ever commendation.

He said: " She is so hard working and an inspiration to us all in Frome . Thank you Terri for all that you do and always with a smile! "

She told Frome Town Council meeting that the fridge and larder, the first of their kind in the UK, would soon be back in the centre of town at the Loop de Loop, after its temporary move to a shed behind the Town Hall. She told Nub News she hopes that will happen in time for Christmas when donations and food drops to the fridge and larder are always more generous.

She said she is also hoping to introduce another fridge soon at Frome College, which could be managed by students who are doing volunteer work for their DoE awards.

The fridge, she told councillors when she was getting the award, not only provides a vital resource to those in need, but it keeps food waste from landfill - over eight Wembley stadiums worth since it started. It is also good for the environment- saving around 1,109 tonnes of CO2 since 2018.

Not only has Frome's fridge inspired other towns to start their own community pantries, it has been on the television - as a star in BBC's Countryfile and in the Escape To The Country show

It has also won an award in Europe. The fridge won the 'Innovation in Politics Award' for best community project. Set up by Edventure Frome CIC in partnership with Frome Town Council in 2016, the project was chosen from 402 projects from 40 countries by an independent jury of 1067 European citizens.
