Who is in the running : Frome elections nominations are in

The nominations have now closed for elections in May, with a full list of candidates listed on the Frome ballot papers.

In what is still Mendip the following elections will take place across the following Electoral Divisions and more than 300 people have put themselves forward.

Frome East, Mendip South, Frome North, Mendip West and

Frome West, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, Street, Mendip Central and East, Wells and Mendip Hills. Frome Nub News will be approaching all of the Frome candidates to ask them to write a short election manifesto ahead of the election. There will be by-elections for Buckland Dinham, Great Elm, Ston Easton and Trudoxhill Parish Councils, due to insufficient candidates for this election. These by-elections will take place within 35 working days of 5 May 2022.

Otherwise all districts will have elections for two councillors and in total there will be a vote, on May 5, to elect a total of 110 councillors for Somerset.

You still have time to register to vote:

New applications to register to vote at this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer at the Election Office, Mendip Council Offices, Cannards Grave Road, Shepton Mallet, BA4 5BTby midnight on Thursday 14 April 2022. Applications can be made online by visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

It will be the inaugural election of the new unitary authority, Somerset Council, which will replace Somerset County Council on 1 April 2023. All councillors will at that time assume responsibility for all council services in Somerset, including those of the districts.

In the case of Frome councillors will take from Mendip more responsibility including managing the green spaces, taking on the market licensing, street cleaning and recycling and some of the car parks. They will also be managers of some of the buildings such as the Cheese & Grain (already part managed and funded by Frome Town Council ) and the Frome Library.
