It was announced earlier this week (Monday 22nd August) that Lib Dem-led Somerset County Council are stepping in to protect an under-threat bus service.

The number 30 bus connects communities around Frome and had been set to cease operation on Saturday 20th August after the commercial operator confirmed they couldn't continue running the service. Following a tender process, the in-house Council fleet was the successful bidder and has now taken up the route.

Following the news, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Somerton & Frome, Sarah Dyke said: "I'm delighted the Council have stepped in to save this crucial bus service. People in our community rely on the number 30 bus to go about their lives and it is brilliant to have found a way forward to protect this service.

"Following the lack of funding from the Conservative government to support bus services, particularly in rural areas, our local authorities are increasingly required to step in and provide the funds required to keep important routes running. I urge both candidates in the Conservative party leadership contest to commit to better funding local services. In the middle of a cost of living crisis and rising fuel costs, our bus services are a lifeline for many in our community and I'm delighted that it is the Liberal Democrats who are again standing up for local people and protecting the services we all rely on. "
