Frome Town Council has drafted two pages of criticism of the proposed development which would see 124 new homes at land South of the Mount in Frome.

The application in front of Mendip planners has had plenty of opposition - and zero local support.

The Frome Town Planning Advisory meeting has now written two pages of damning criticisms of the plans which it will send to Mendip.

The application (2019/3076/FUL) is for full planning permission for residential development together with associated infrastructure including landscaping, open space, drainage and highway access. and parking. There have been 59 public comments on-line against the proposal which councillors heard was: " Just not a future-proof development."

They are opposed to the lack of pavements, lack of cycle lanes, and the huge increase in traffic that will inevitably come from the number of houses on land South of the Mount.

One comment posted stated: " I do not object to the building of new homes - we all have to live somewhere - but even to consider this to be a sensible approach to the transport provisions makes a mockery of everything the Transport Framework sets out. It is time for you - Mendip District Council - to stand up and be counted. Your obligation is to existing residents every bit as as much as it is to new people moving into the area, and this so far seems not to take any account of those who already live here."

The meeting heard first from a representative of the Friends of Little Keyford, FOLK, who told them: " We have always felt that this is the wrong side of town, but we accept we have lost that battle." But he went on to to question the safety of the site, the pressure of traffic, people walking on the roads, the impact it will have on the nearby dark skies site, one of just 14 in the UK, and the lack of design thinking in the way the homes look.

Other local residents insisted that the key thing to question is : "Does this development create harm" and suggested that in principal because it does, it might be open to legal challenge.

There has not been one supportive comment on the Mendip planning portal and this was reflected by the planning committee members who agreed that: " There are loads of things wrong with this."

Cllr Steve Tanner said " It all falls down to needing a master plan. It is just not a future-proofed development." He listed many of the things lacking in the project, from the issue of children needing to cross a 60mph road to get to school, the lack of connectivity, the design of the homes, and the builders using the "cheapest of the cheap materials."

The planning meeting agreed unanimously to object to the application in a two page long letter to Mendip which will include all the detrimental aspects of the site, which has been part designed by David Wilson Homes, from the inspiring layout through to the danger issues around traffic.

Full details on the application can be found by pressing the Red Button below.

The next Frome planning meeting will be at 7pm on 20 February in the Council Chamber, Frome Town Hall, Christchurch Street West, Frome BA11 1EB.
