Frome RFC II take on Marlborough

By Susie Watkins 10th Nov 2021

The Frome RFC 2nd XV travelled to Marlborough RFC full of confidence after another win the week before, but were fully aware of the threat Marlborough 2nd XV have.

Frome began the match attacking down the hill with Marlborough kicking off and Frome looked to put their phases together early on, but some over ambitious off loads put themselves under some unnecessary pressure.

Some good work by the Marlborough back row, lead to a penalty on Frome's 10m line, which the Marlborough kicker stepped up and slotted between the posts to take a 3 - 0 lead on only 6 minutes.

Frome continued to try hard to get into the game but were struggling to match Marlborough's intensity around the break down and kept giving away penalties which slowed down any momentum.

The visitors were hit with an early blow when on 8 mins Full Back Ben Eley left the field with to an eye injury, a juggle around in the back three saw Harry Burge coming onto the wing.

On 12 mins, Frome worked well and found themselves in the oppositions 22, and pushed hard and were awarded with a penalty. Fly Half, Brad Parry took on the kicking duties and squared the score 3 - 3.

From the restart Marlborough attacked again and Frome gave away another penalty in a kickable position, but this time the Marlborough kicker was just off target.

Frome continued to struggle with the break down finding themselves frustrated by Marlboroughs counter rucking and jackling, but were awarded when Marlborough's Hooker was shown a yellow card for infringing in the ruck.

Frome then managed to work some phases and with Marlborough giving away another penalty, Captain, Dave Abraham's kicked to the corner.

From this the Forwards hit their jumper and set up a catch and drive, with perfect body positions drove the maul over the line, with Prop Jason Barraclough dotting down, Parry adding the extras.

On 29 mins Marlborough's Scrum Half failed to retreat on a penalty and was shown a yellow card. This however didn't seem to slow the home side down and kept on banging on the Frome defence and on 36mins, Frome gave away another penalty at the break down and the Marlborough kicker stepped up again and added 3 points.

Straight from the kick off Marlborough again pushed hard and despite Frome's best effort the Marlborough No. 8 crashed over, with the conversation being added Marlborough went into the break 13-10 up. During the build up to the play Centre Matt Warnock was deemed to not have retreated fully at a penalty and was also shown a yellow.

A change before the restart saw Ali Frost enter the field in place of Ethan White, and with the half time words ringing in their ears the Frome players up'd the tempo and the intensity, with centre Frost making an instant impact on his first carry, which resulted in a penalty and kept the Frome team in the Marlborough half.

With instructions to stay patient Frome kept the phases going with important carries from the Forwards, with a special mention to Second Row, Connor McPherson who seemed to be everywhere.

On 57 mins prop Ali Fisher made way to Alex Twigger. At 65mins the pressure finally told and Frome RFC's No.8 Rob James crashed over to take the lead. 13 - 15.

On 68 mins White returned to the field with Captain Abrahams heading to the sideline, and another reshuffle in the backline.

Burge who had now moved to Scrum Half made a break from half way through the Marlborough defence and was supported by McPherson and then James as they went into the opposition 22, resulting in another penalty for the visitors. It was McPherson who was quickest to react and took a quick tap to crash over under the posts. Extras added by Parry.

Then on 77 mins Marlborough were able to work the ball wide and found their Winger who who showed his pace to score in the corner to put the game in the balance at 18 - 22.

Frome had other ideas and put pressure on the kick off, which saw Marlborough going back over their try line kicking the ball out of the dead ball area, this resulted in a scrum. The dominating scrum saw No.8 James pick up and go for the line only to stopped just short, but with Flanker Damon Ashmore close to hand, he was able to crash over to secure the points. Parry adding the extras 18 - 29.

With only a few minutes left Marlborough attempted to keep the ball in play but couldn't stop Frome from winning a break down and kicking the ball out, to secure the away bonus point win.
