This Sunday, Sherborne hosted Frome U14's for the Dorset and Wiltshire fixture. With the hint of Summer in the air, both teams started with attacking intent.
The opening try for Frome, which settled early nerves came after quick hands. Collecting the ball in his own half, Harrie Webster showed an electric turn of pace, scoring well in the corner. The conversion was narrowly missed. The game fell into a steady rhythm, with Frome in the ascendency but unable to make the final pass stick. From a ruck turnover from Ewan Cox, Aelfric Bidder broke away. He ran through the oncoming defence and flicked an instinctive pass to Liam Backhurst - who finished well in the corner. Again, the conversion drifted wide.
Following sustained pressure, Frome were awarded a penalty in the opposition 22. Captain Alfie Newbery took a quick tap, followed by a long pass and put Toby Cassidy into space. Toby finished well, under the posts. Archie Pearn added the extra's.
A series of strong rucks from Harry Greenwood, Rob Norris and Oscar Stickey led to Frome marching up the field. Two tries came in quick succession. A good scrummage led Newbery to draw the defence and put Pearn into a gap, who stepped and finished well. Zach Sibley scoring the conversion. The fifth try of the half came from Ewan Cox, who followed up a good run from Cassidy, by picking and going, crashing over the line. Pearn added the extra's. The half time score was 31 - 0, in favour of the visitors.
The second half began, in a similar fashion to the first. Both teams tried to move the ball quickly. Sherborne struck first, for their first try - with a darting run from the midfield. The conversion was missed. Frome struck back immediately, a good turnover at the kick return, by Alfie Rayers led to three phases of attack. Sibley picked up from the back of a ruck, to run in, converting his own try.
The game continued to ebb and flow with a kick through from Sherborne causing broken play, eventually finished under the posts. This time the conversion was successful, to leave the scores 12 v 38. Sherborne continued to attack via the boot, with Webster running the kicks back with interest from full-back. These were followed up by breaks from Greenwood and Pearn. Frome hammered away on the try line with Dillon Harding narrowly held-up over the try line.
There was time for one last attack. From a strong scrummage, Newbery dummied then fed Fly-half Pearn, who sprinted through to score the final try, which he converted.
The score at the final whistle was 12 - 45, Frome collecting the bonus point win. Both teams then ate together in the Sherborne club house, celebrating a great game, played in good spirits.
