Frome RFC seconds were away to Calne

By Susie Watkins 25th Oct 2021

The Frome RFC 2nd XV made the trip to Calne full of confidence from their previous win against Warminster, although fully appreciating the tough task ahead of them.

Straight from kick off, the Frome forwards showed their intent with shifting the ball away from contact earlier and moving the Calne forwards around the contact area.

Frome moved the ball up the field and were rewarded from their first attack play with Hooker, Phil Clarke keeping up his scoring record crashing over for a try from a quick tap penalty. The conversion going wide.

The home side started to gain some composure only to hit a firm Frome defence, the visitors entered Calnes half again on 14 mins with Outside Centre Tom Howley making a line brake and finding Winger, Craig Thompson coming off his wing to touch down.

Frome's Forwards started to show their strength, and No.8 Rob James showed his class from a scrum in Frome's 22, taking the ball blind and dummying the Winger and taking the ball up to half way line before passing it off to Full Back John Spencer who attempted to kick over the last defender with the ball unfortunately going into touch.

The penalties were now mounting up for the home side as Frome piled on the pressure, then on 30 mins Frome took a scrum against the head inside Calnes 22 and No.8 James seized his chance to crash over.

Frome again worked the phases well and moved up the field with Fly Half Parry pulling the strings, on 37 mins Parry found a lovely inside pass to Flanker Damon Ashmore to carve untouched under the posts for the score.

A quick brake away attack by Calne caught Frome on the back foot and the Calne Fly Half managed to catch Parry wrong footed and tripped his opposite number leaving the ref no choice but to produce a yellow card.

Frome responded well from being a man down and within four minutes of the restart Frome's No.8 James jumped on a mistake in the line out and crashed over for his second try of the match.

With Parry back on the field again, Frome regained their structure and camped in Calne's half, gaps in the defence were being found now and Inside Centre Ethan White broke through into the 22 before being held up just short.

Frome were then forced to shuffle the pack with Prop Dan Chavente making way for a debut by Gareth Schreuder coming on into the Centre and White going into the scrum.

On 55 mins the Frome scrum showed their dominance again and they pushed their way over the line with James claiming his hat trick of tries with a touch down.

On 60 mins Captain David Abrahams made way for Lloyd Penny at Scrum Half, and within minutes of being on Flanker Ashmore broke through feeding Centre Howley who took the ball into the 22 before passing to Penny who touched down under the posts.

On 63 mins Winger Craig Thompson made way for Kyle Williamson.

Frome pushed again and on 68 mins from a good line out Hooker, Clarke managed to get free and crashed over for his second of the match.

Frome were now opening up in midfield and Parry took advantage of this receiving a lovely pass from Ashmore allowing him to brake through feeding Schreuder who out paced the defence to score his debut try.

Unfortunately Second Row Connor McPherson was shown yellow for retaliation but there was still time however for another sweeping move by Frome with Parry linking up again with Schreuder who touched down for his second.
