This Sunday, the Frome RFC U15s travelled to Weston Super Mare, to face Hornets RFC in the Quarter Finals of the Somerset Cup.

The game started with a bang, Ben Freeman gathered a kick and sprinted up his wing, before being tackled. Following a two and fro between both teams, Weston moved toward the try line - to meet a wall, in the shape of Ewan Cox - who tackled into touch.

After 8 minutes, Rufus Phelps, jackled the ball for the second time in two minutes, on the half-way line. Frome attacked at speed, Alfie Newbery fed Archie Pearn, who passed to Zach Sibley. Sibley showed his speed and finished well in the corner, to give from an early 0 - 5 lead.

The lead lasted three minutes, Weston had two penalties and a row and ran strongly to score. The score was 7 - 5. Following a kick off, Cox carried well, before off-loading to Adam Hancock. He fended the oncoming defender and released Pearn, who was inches from scoring.

Olly Merritt gathered a kick, under extreme pressure and combined well with Harrie Webster to attack. Weston turned the ball over. From the resulting defensive kick, Freeman expertly gathered the ball, and beat two defenders, to score a fantastic individual try. The score was now poised well at 7 - 10.

Frome continued to attack at speed, Harrie Webster combined well with Pearn, to put Harry Millard in space. The winger moving towards the 22, before being tackled well. The half ended, with the score still at 7 - 10.

The first ten minutes of the second half was like a brutal chess game, with defence keeping attack at bay for both sides. The perfect example being the moment when Norris and Sibley combined to tackle the Weston Centre and literally picking and driving him back 10 meters.

With almost three-quarters of the game gone, Frome were agonisingly close to a an interception try… but the try would arrive minutes later. Newbery offloaded to Pearn, who stepped and unleashed Webster. Webster used his pace to weave his way through five defenders to finish under the posts, for an outstanding individual effort. The score was 7 - 15.

For the next five minutes of the half, Frome defended heroically. Oscar Stickely and Phelps refused to be moved, allowing Freddie Corp to turn the ball over and Pearn to clear. However, the pressure eventually told and Weston scored to take the score to 12 - 15.

The killer blow arrived with minutes left, Frome swarmed in defence. Phelps turned the ball over. A tap and go from scrum half Newbery gave Pearn possession. He found Hancock in space and Norris appeared on a loop to take the pass and storm his way to the line for the final try.

Weston were well beaten 12 - 22 and Frome steam on, into the Semi-Finals.

FT: Hornets RFC 12 - 22 Frome RFC

Players of the Match: Alfie Newbery and Archie Pearn.
