The Frome River at Welshmill was today (March 19) clear after reports that it had been polluted by oil via a surface water drain.

The pollutants were spotted by several River Frome supporters who wanted to remind residents that no kind of polluting substances should be tipped down roadside drains because they usually lead into the river.

If you have any old chemicals or oil to dispose of they can be taken down to the dump at the Marston industrial estate in Frome.

The Environment Agency should be called if there is :

: damage or danger to the natural environment

:pollution to water or land

:poaching or illegal fishing

:dead fish or fish gasping for air

:main rivers blocked by a vehicle or fallen tree causing risk of flooding

:illegal removals from watercourses

:unusual changes in river flow

: collapsed or badly damaged river or canal banks

The incident hotline is :

0800 80 70 60

A campaigner posted : " Please be mindful of our river which has many challenges without experiencing these kind of incidents caused probably by somebody thinking that the drains are a dump for anything. "
