Frome skatepark re-opens, what happened to the campaign for another park in the town?

Frome's skate park has now re-opened after it was chained off by Frome Town Council citing coronavirus regulations.

However as Frome Nub News discovered, the park, alongside Victoria Park in the town, was still being used even while railings were in place.

The park was closed by the council on February 18. You can read that story HERE : the Frome Nub News site

Skateboarders who spoke to Nub News, described how unfair the issue was when the next door children's play area was allowed to remain open, and was on the day we visited, packed.

Local neighbourhood police officers had discussed the issue of large groups gathering around the ramps, and the council had responded with the railings.

Now those railings have come down, ahead of the relaxation of coronavirus rules on Monday which allow out door sporting events to take place.

But the issue of the skate park, and a wider issue of what there is to do in Frome for teenagers, has been loud on social media.

In Midsomer Norton, which also took down its skate park barriers this week, the park is about four times as big and has twice as many ramps.

Meantime the campaign for more skate parks in the UK, Skateboard GB has just announced that it is partnering with Habito, the online mortgage broker, lender and home-buying service.

Together they will be developing skateable spaces, including DIY community projects and city centre skate spaces.

Later this month, Skateboard GB, based out of Sheffield, is also set to announce the date of the National Championships, the only Olympic qualifying event held in Great Britain this year, with the best skateboarders from around the country competing for a £7,000 prize fund.
