Co-leader Carla Denyer from the Green Party of England Wales was in Frome today (April 20) as part of her work across the South West garnering support ahead of May's elections.

The Party has made the South West one of its key targets for the forthcoming May elections and was in the centre of town to meet local candidates and promote their policies.

Nub News took a few moments to talk to her about the Green Party policies and how they are being received by voters in Frome:

" We already have some fantastic Green councillors in Frome - now with these elections coming up with the new Somerset unitary council we hope that the residents of Frome will recognise the hard work that these local Green councillors have already done . We have got Greens standing up and down the country and I have been hearing about the fantastic work that those councillors have been doing in particular help in tackling the cost of living crisis. "

" I have visited Frome a few times and it seems a very green town and there is a lot of appetite for change in this area. Frome is definitely somewhere we are hoping to make gains. We are targeting East and West Frome specially.

"One of the unique things about the Green Party is that we do not 'whip' our members so what that means is that our elected members aren't told how to vote - so that means they are free to stand up for their residents on local issues. So they can bring an independent mind to things like local planning and development. "

The Green Party co-chair said she has been visiting a number of local foodbanks.

" Unfortunately the volunteers are telling me that they are really seeing a change in the kind of people who are using this help. It is not the same faces, it is new people and families, who have never had to rely on charity before and very worryingly it is a lot of people who are in work. So they are receiving a salary but it is not covering their food and their bills. I agree with Frome foodbank ; this situation cannot be allowed to continue, people being able to heat their homes and feed their children should not be considered a luxury or something they have to rely on a charity to fill ."

And so-called 'Partygate' are voters still talking about this ?

" Partygate is just the latest in a long line of disasters that has shown voters that they cannot trust the Conservatives. That is part of why we have seen a lot of voters coming to the Greens from across the political spectrum. We are finding that a lot o fed up with the old tired political parties and who want power for power's sake and they want candidates who are going to stand up for them and their communities."
