As reported on Frome Nub News, life-time Frome resident Pat Laye has created a castle with nothing but wool, imagination and amazingly with limited eye sight.
Pat created her towering knitted castle without a pattern, knitting up to three hours every day to raise money for the Macular Society.
Now complete, she has turned her attention to recreating the seven dwarves, again without a pattern or plan, but with bags of enthusiasm.
And no, she isn't about to cull one off to keep to the group of six rule. Under coronavirus her castle creation couldn't be shown at the Frome Cheese Show, but she is still hoping that it will make money, as do all her knitting creations, for the local Macular Society. Pat told Nub News : " I have been knitting for 60 or 70 years I should think, I suppose I have always just done it since my mum taught me when I was five or six years old. " I don't like knitting clothes, especially when it wasn't baby clothes and so I started knitting toys. I want to raise as much money as possible for this wonderful society." Pat started her castle in November 2019 and then, with some breaks for getting fed up, finished it in March this year, just as lockdown came. The castle was due to be auctioned at the show and Pat still hopes it will raise money for the charity which helps those suffering with Macular Degeneration. I am lucky I can still see most things (and keep knitting). I didn't know if I could make this (the castle) it was just something I gambled at."
