Sunday the 5th of June will mark World Environment Day, and according to a leading rail technology magazine Frome station is leading the way in greening up the lines.

Frome Nub News was at the station on May 31 and noticed all the new plantings and wild flowers in two new containers.

Network Rail, Frome Station Friends, and The Bee Friendly Trust have worked together to build sustainable habitats for urban wildlife by installing bee-friendly planters on the disused platform, matching two already in place at the station.

A new protecting panel has been build on the unused platform so the Friends can tend the two bee-friendly planters, purchased by Network Rail from The Bee Friendly Trust.

Aleka Toogood, Network Rail environment specialist, is quoted in Rail Technology Magazine saying : "The railway plays a vital role in connecting wildlife habitats and these planters will help to support urban ecosystems by providing spaces for bees and other pollinators to thrive.

"The project offers broader social benefits for the community as well as the bees and helps connect local communities to the environment."
