In case you missed it: More sausage rolls - As Greggs plans new expansion in Frome

By Susie Watkins 3rd Nov 2021

Greggs could open its newest Somerset outlet on a Frome business park if plans are approved.

The popular bakery chain has submitted plans to convert the former Carephone Warehouse store on Wessex Fields into a takeaway outlet with outside seating.

The company has not confirmed how many new jobs would be created on the site, which lies a stone's throw from the town's Sainsbury's supermarket and a planned new housing development.

Mendip District Council is expected to make a final decision on the plans in early-2022.

The unit in question lies on the eastern side of Wessex Fields, between the existing KFC outlet and the Topps Tiles branch.

Carphone Warehouse's owner Dixon Carphone took the decision to close all standalone Carphone Warehouse stores in early-2020, with around 2,900 jobs being lost across the UK.

In addition to changing the internal layout of the store, a new outside seating area will be created with the car park being reorganised and a new set of steps leading down to Wessex Fields.

A spokesman for Pegasus Planning Group (representing the applicant) said: "The proposed alterations are of a modern appearance to complement the existing appearance of the building and create an attractive building which suits the operational requirements of the occupier.

"Greggs is committed to maintaining a clean and tidy environment; therefore, bins will be provided on site.

"Overall, the proposal would not have any harmful effects with relation to noise and noise, litter and odours which would harm the surrounding locality."

The outlet lies to the west of Sandys Hill Lane -the future site of up to 235 homes and new commercial units after outline plans were approved by the council's planning board in July 2020.

Revised plans for 198 homes on the site have been put forward by the Curo housing association, with a separate application for the commercial elements expected early in the new year.

The council is expected to make a final decision on the Greggs proposals early in the new year.
