It is International Cat Day, started in 2002 and an effort by the International Fund for Animal Welfare to raise awareness of our feline friends and to protect them. Not, that Nub News suspects cats really think they are our friends, simply that the tolerate us in order that we provide food and shelter.

Certainly cats have an elevated sense of themselves, which is maybe why they were worshipped as kings by the ancient Egyptians and even today are considered bringers of luck.

According to one leading pet food manufacturer, there are around eleven million cats in the UK, which means that over a quarter of all households have a cat in residence.

The photo shows the famed cat house popular with tourists visiting Spain.

The tiny house is only a foot tall but it is designed in a classically Valencian style with a Spanish tiled roof, a little fountain, and a small garden to the side. Legend has it that the old woman who previously owned the house behind the gate left it for the feral cats of Valencia to inhabit.
