Speaking in Parliament, Sarah Dyke outlined the vital importance of post offices to rural communities and expressed concern about the impact on Somerset residents of being unable to complete transactions in person. The Post Office is increasingly moving towards online services and from March next year, people may no longer be able to renew their driving licences or pay their vehicle tax at Post Office counters.

According to the National Federation of SubPostmasters, post offices carry out six million DVLA transactions every year, with more than half being paid for in cash over the post office counter. Liberal Democrats have been critical of the Conservative Government for eroding the Post Office's role in handling pensions and other benefit pay-outs, TV licences and passport applications.

Sarah Dyke Liberal Democrat MP for Somerton and Frome said:  "I met with several postmasters in my constituency, in Frome and Martock, and they are worried that from the 31st of March next year, people will be unable to access DVLA services from Post Office branches.

"I know that the range of services offered in the post offices in Frome and Martock are essential to many residents.

"We need to recognise the loss of in-person services at Post Office branches and the regrettable impact that will have on rural communities."
