Torrential rain and heavy winds hit Frome today (February 15) as Storm Dennis swept across the country.

Some of the main roads from Frome into the Mendips were impassable later in the day, with reports of a tree down on the road toward Great Elm, localised flooding in roads into Vobster Quay and the river rising to dangerous levels in Mells.

On the road out to the luxury hotel Babington House cars were queuing to pass one car at time having to pass through wheel-arch deep water.

The River Mells rose close to the road, although at lunchtime, after a morning of heavy and persistent rain it had still not breached its banks. There is however more rain forecast overnight and into Sunday morning, before it should finally ease around teatime tomorrow.

There is currently only one flood alert place - concerning the River Biss which is being closely monitored.

The Environment Agency put out the yellow warning for the Trowbridge Paxcroft river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall on Saturday.

The Agency warned: " We believe there is a possibility of flooding for the Westbury Road (A363) at Yarnbrook, Hawkeridge Road at Horse Bridge, Shallow Wagon Lane at Heywood and West Ashton Road at Trowbridge. Further rainfall associated with Storm Dennis, sometimes heavy and persistent, is forecast over the next 12 hours. River levels can rise quickly in response to further rainfall. We are closely monitoring the situation. "

Meantime the winds overnight are forecast to pick up in Frome to near gale force from midnight until 3am.

The only relief is that it is remaining relatively mild, with temperatures expected to remain around 12 degrees celsius throughout the night.

At 5pm Highways England repeated its warning that Storm Dennis will affect all regions with strong winds and heavy rain all weekend. They asked drivers to take care when travelling and to consider whether your journey is necessary before setting out.
