Frome Town Council's planning board will this week be discussing possible solutions to what has been revealed as Mendip's biggest fly-tipping hotspot - Berkley Lane & Dark Lane .

They will be talking about the possibility of pedestrianising the two roads, which are up by the Frome rugby club.

At the meeting on August 26 councillors will hear that it has been costing Mendip District Council over £60,000 a year to clear the fly tipping up on the roads - due to the "vast quantities" and the frequency of fly-tipping clearances required.

The roads have been periodically closed to through traffic with bollards, a public space order, but in February this year Mendip's Cabinet, following consideration of legal advice, resolved not to extend those orders.

They are now looking to find a long-term solution to this situation the formation of a multi-agency working group consisting of among others, the District Council, Somerset County Council, and the police.

Feedback on plans to close the roads need to completed by September 12, so that ideas can be reported back to the full council by the end of September.
