Not the Christmas present Frome Town Football Club had wished for
Called off due to the teeming rain on a wet and wild afternoon, as Frome were two goals up, was not the result the team, the manager, or the hundreds of fans were hoping for at the last home game of 2019.
Perhaps Santa, who was out and about in the town centre before the game, didn't think the players had been good enough?Freezing driving rain did not deter 394 football fans from turning out to watch their side take on Thatcham Town in atrocious weather and even when the rain eased half way into the first half, the ground was treacherous.
The team were cheered up by their first goal, from a penalty, a perfect finish from number 17 Alex Monks. He followed up minutes later with a fabulous goal, but his celebrations, joined by his team mates, showed their skating skills as much as their footwork, as they slid to take their applause from the crowd.
The officials were in furrows as deep as a ploughed field, and several chances were missed, with half a dozen attempts on goal by the home side, as perhaps the players were understandably cautious in the slippery conditions. The rain returned, in driving freezing sheets, and to boos from the crowd, the referee called off the match at 4.28. So they will have to play the fixture again, and will be hoping for more cheerful weather.
The next match for Frome will be away on Boxing Day to Melksham Town, with the next home game, on New Year's Day, against Cinderford, with an away game to Bideford on January 4. Meantime it will party time at least in the club house with events on Christmas Eve and on New Year's Eve, when it would be hoped that the celebrations come with less of a danger warning.
